“Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything!”

Local libraries were a treasure trove for us, when we were kids. The story-telling sessions, summer reading contests, the book clubs…have become obsolete but we should re-iterate the importance of reading habits!!! Making reading enjoyable by using interactive books, exploration with different genres, using dramatic (theatrical) tools and creating an inducing environment can help, to great extend, if we want to inculcate this habit among the children!

Every year, most people set this as a new year resolution, to read more, than the previous year! As the researches say, about 80% of our new year resolutions goes unrealized, unaccomplished. Reading habit is beneficial. Not only for the little ones but even for the college goers, office workers, entrepreneurs, home-makers, newly mothers, aging parents. Yes. A habit of book reading is a boon to one and all.

Some super easy ways to start with this amazing habit of reading are here:

Tip#1 Identify, why do you want to read at all

It is imperative to know, or let us say, set a goal for yourself, when it comes to reading. For someone, it could be just reading a certain number of books in a year. Some may want to start reading to increase their knowledge about a particular domain. There are readers who wants to enrich themselves, spiritually and take up reading as a way to do so. Whatever the reason is, just make sure, you make it an enjoyable process, a journey to remember for lifetime.

Tip#2 Set a target of reading a particular number of pages

This is especially for the addicts. There are readers who just have no control on themselves when it comes to reading. Then there are others who get bored pretty fast and hardly are able to read even a unit. It is important that you set a goal and abide by your set goal. A goal should always be measurable and by setting a certain number of pages to be read a day, is a great way to start.

Tip#3 Fix a particular time to read

Set aside a specific time of the day to read the book or the bookmarked blog that you have assigned for yourself. Keep distractions like TV or your phone at bay. To start with, at a stretch read for 30-40 mins. If you keep very busy but really want to start off with reading habit, assign a particular day/s of the week for reading.

Tip#4 Get a reading partner OR a membership to a book club OR a library

When you set up a goal, accountability is a driving force to accomplish it. Reading with someone who enjoys to do so, encourages and motivates you to a great extent. A conversation about what you read, with someone who is keen on listening to you is what any reader would want. One need to be focused and consistent when you start with inculcating any habit, what so ever. Reading habit should start as early in life, as possible. But it is never too late to start reading.

Just identify your favorite genre, and very soon you will know, your list of favorite authors. To develop a reading culture, you must first of all access your current reading habits. Do you read at all? Do you start off and stop at some point? What is your duration of attention span? Do you plan your reading or just read randomly? In order to truly achieve your reading goals and build a consistent reading habit, you’ll need to set up simple systems, use the right reading tools. Read the way you want, paper-copies, kindle, audiobooks.
